The Loire River – the longest in France – crosses a number of different regions of the country, many of which are “wine producing areas”.
The best known:
The Sancerre area, close to Burgundy, with its excellent Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé wines.
The Touraine, more to the west, produces a large variety of wines from a light white table wine (e.g Cheverny) to a powerful red wine (e.g. Chinon).
A significant part of the castles are also situated in Touraine.
The Anjou, still further to the west, is known for its slightly sweet rosé-wines, its tasty sparkling wines and an increasing production of top range still wines.
